about us
Amparo Avila, Founder
Amparo started her own business in 1988 producing window treatment products for interior designers in New England. She has produced every type of treatment for curtains and shades using the best materials available in the world market. The finest fabrics have passed through her expert hands to become beautiful and sophisticated custom products that satisfy the demanding requirements of designers for exclusive environments in luxurious homes.
A creative urge coupled with this experience and knowledge of textiles, together with her love of nature, led Amparo to create her own designs. She used fibers that were known to her from childhood in her native Colombia, a country that enjoys a multitude of micro climates due to its unique geography. Plants that have been used for centuries to make textiles are found there in mountains, jungles, valleys and plains. Among them are cotton found in the hot dry plains of the Magdalena River, sisal and hemp in colder climates, and iraca or palmatoquilla in Nariño or Santander provinces. Mulberry is grown in the coffee producing areas to feed silkworms from which we obtain the silk thread used in our products.
Marleny Carvajal, Director of Weaving
Marleny learned and perfected the art of weaving from an early age, under the guidance of textile professionals and artisans, using silk as the primary material. She combines her experience cultivating silk with her weaving skills and knowledge of natural dyes to faithfully interpret the designs that come out of the looms.
Her dedication and pursuit of perfection and the high degree of responsibility that characterize her work make Marleny a professional who is respected and admired by those who work under her direction.
Dora Conejo, First Weaver
Dora is an expert with the loom and in spinning silk thread. She is a valued collaborator who is always ready to face the challenges inherent in producing new designs.
The team
In addition to those who lead the firm, innumerable people - most of them women heads of households - work the land daily to harvest and prepare the fibers that supply our looms. They become beautiful textiles that will some day adorn living rooms and bedrooms and bring comfort and beauty to distinguised environments.
our story
Since
nothing in the world is purely coincidence, one fine day Amparo heard
about someone who for a long time she had known that she would find. If
was someone who loved textiles as much as she did, who knew about
natural fibers, who knew the art of the loom and who knew where to find
artisans capable of bringing together their knowledge and skills to
create what Amparo had dreamed of for years.
That's how she found Alicia Perilla, a graduate of the University of the Andes in Bogota, Colombia where she majored in textile arts. Here is where the dream began to crystalize. Alicia introduced Amparo to Marleny and they immediately found themselves speaking the same language, understanding each others ideas almost without having to speak.
They began to experiment, making sample textiles with almost every fiber they could find. Some where successful, while others were discarded, often with input from Ana Maria - Amparo's daughter - who helped with her artistic judgement and photographer's eye. All the ideas were tried out on the loom and refined until they passed the tests of high quality and great design.
They traveled to many different parts of the country to find people who produced the various fibers. Often they took part in processing the material. Through this experience, they learned which techniques were sustainable and environmentally responsible, and this led them to accept or reject certain products.
And so, after almost two years, they completed the test and developed the samples needed to launch the product line that we offer today. We submit our products to the scrutiny of our clients, principally to interior designers, and through them to the ultimate consumers.
Support from our families has been crucial to this effort. The constructive critiques from Amparo's clients of over twenty years have provided the best possible feedback, which we needed to make this project a reality.
